Direction is mobilizing officials who have been determined to carry out their duties with actions in the form of orders, communication, motivational advice, and so on in the form of activities that can encourage workers to carry out their duties wholeheartedly.

Definition of Direction

Directing is one of the functions of management. Directing is also often referred to as a directing function or actuating function, and some are calling it a leading function. In general, direction means an activity of giving instructions, commands, and instructions to others.

Directions can also be interpreted as:

the process of guiding the activities of members of the organization in the right direction.

a desire or process to get others to follow their desires by using personal power or office power effectively and in place in the long-term interests of an organization.

Whereas in the Big Indonesian Dictionary, direction is interpreted as giving instructions or guidelines for carrying out an activity.

The question is who gives direction? In the management structure, top management will provide direction to management at lower levels. Middle level management will provide management at the lower level again, and so on until the person who has the last authority in an organization.

The briefing function can only be applied after planning and organizing, and with employees. If the briefing function is applied, then the management process in trying to achieve organizational goals can already be started. Therefore it is stated that the directing function is one of the most important functions in management and must be mastered in the management process.

  • Siswanto, argues that direction is an activity related to giving orders and suggestions.

  • George R. Terry, argues that directing is a process to move group members to want to work together and work with sincerity and enthusiasm to achieve organizational goals in accordance with planning and organizing efforts.

  • Koontz and O’Donnel, argued that direction is the relationship between individual aspects caused by the arrangement of subordinates to be understood and division of work more effectively to achieve real organizational goals.

The briefing process will always involve four components of activities, namely:

  • Lead
  • Communicate
  • Consider Groups
  • Motivate

By carrying out these four activities, a leader can change the input in the form of organizational resources into the behavior of organizational members expected by the management system.

Pervasive Function

the point is that direction is accepted at various levels of the organization. Each manager provides instructions and inspiration to his subordinates.

Continuous Activity

the point is that direction is a form of ongoing activity throughout the lifetime of the organization.

Human Factor

the point is that direction is always related to subordinates, so it will be related to human factors. Human factors are complex and unpredictable human behavior.

Creative Activity

the point is that the direction will help and make it easier to change the plan in real action. Without this directing function, a person can become inactive and the physical resources they have will become meaningless.

Executive Function

the point is that direction is carried out by all managers and executives at all levels in all types of organizations, and subordinates only receive instructions only from their superiors.

Delegated Function

the point is direction is a management function that is directly dealing with humans. Superiors must be able to know that human behavior is something that is unpredictable and natural, so superiors must be able to condition one’s behavior toward the expected goals.

 

Purpose of Direction

In general, the purpose of the briefing is so that the tasks that become the obligations of members of the organization can be carried out and completed properly, so that organizational goals can be achieved by referring to the planning that has been set by the organization. In more detail, the purpose of the briefing is as follows:

As a motivational tool

A leader must be able to provide more explanation and motivation to its members, in order to carry out their duties properly. Direction is not only limited to asking, not just demanding. Directing also motivates those who are told.

Initiate Action

The direction given will enable members of the organization to understand and carry out work according to instructions given by the leadership.

Efficient Use of Resources

The direction will limit what needs to be done and what is not done. Thus the resources owned by the organization can work with the maximum, so as to minimize costs and provide maximum benefits.

Coping Changes

Coping is a process of adjustment to changes that occur. Change will always happen, and it must immediately be responded to by the organization. Directives can be used by management to communicate with members of the organization to clearly and easily understand about changes and how to deal with those changes.

Direction aims to make all activities in the organization go hand in hand and work together. Make what is in the organization does not conflict with each other.
